I have been running Fedora 9 successfully on my HP Pavillion dv9000 since it was released. Everything worked for me out of the ISO. However, lately, especially when on battery power, my system will just freeze. At first I suspected it had something to do with the laptop running on battery power only. But it just locked on me last night. Will just have to monitor this and see if any more clues as to why this happens appear.

While I admit, Fedora 9 can be buggy, it is a great distribution and most importantly, it is free. It works well, there are free updates, the community is your free support, and you can breathe new life into your older PC's with great performance.

Good luck with your Fedora 9 issues. I am already playing with beta 10.

I installed FC9 onto a new drive in what is to be a dual boot machine that has an Intel 3GHz processor and 2 Gig of RAM. After many attempts I finally got a complete install. On the restart Grub runs okay and then the OS starts to load. When The OS Encounters the USB port stuff I get the following: USB 9-1 Device descriptor Read/64, error -71 This happens 4 times, next I get USB 9-1 Device descriptor Devie not accepting address - this occurs 2 times. THEN I get SELinux could not openpolicy file <= /etc/selinux/targeted.policy/policy.23: No such file or directory. AFTER this I get the killer: Unable to load SELinux (No such file or directory) Halting now

If anyone has a solution to this I would sure appreciate hearing from you.
Thank

I am shocked at the bugginess of Fedora 9 KDE version. I ordered the live CD and tried to connect to the internet using KPPP. No can do. I gave up and just yesterday I thought I'd install it in hopes it would work better. I can connect, but I cannot serf using Konqueror. I finally had to do some file comparing with another distro that does work for me, Pardus 2008.1 and looked at resolv.conf files. In Fedora's etc/resolve.conf it was empty, with Pardus it contained two nameservers, so I copied the two nameservers in var/run/PPP/resilve.conf and pasted them (as su) in the etc/resolv.conf file. Now I can surf, but there are some messy pages with javascripting using Konqueror.

I just tried to use the Add/Remove Software gpk package manager and it is horrible. I tried to click on refresh repositories and it says I have no connection. So I click on Internet (to see if I can install Firefox) and it starts to download, but takes forever, and doesn't let me know how long it will take to finish, just a progress bar going back and forth. I'm on dial up, so I was wondering what it was doing and how long it would take. I ended up canceling it after 30 minutes.

I'd like to update to kde4.1 as I've heard kde4 is a bit of a messy desktop, not ready. I'm new to the Fedora world, as I am familiar with ubuntu, kubuntu, Linux Mint, and Simply Mepis, besides my new favourite, Pardus. This Fedora 9 KDE version is almost an embarrassment. Right now there is a white rectangle in my kicker panel, and it wasn't there earlier, but when I hover the cursor over it, it doesn't say what it is, when I click on it, nothing. Just a rubbish nothing.

The one thing I liked in this desktop is kword. A great word processor. Other than that, I am sorely displeased. Even the live disk doesn't let me eject it when I click, restart computer. The eject button wouldn't respond.

I'll play with it some more, but so far, it is more hair-pulling than pleasing.

I am also having a problem installing FC9. I previously had FC8 installed with no problems. Now, my box wont boot up. There is no video, only a blinking cursor with a fuzzy looking background. This keeps going on and does not stop. If I edit grub to start on runlevel 3, I am then able to startx but if I change inittab to make this persistent, the same problem happens.

I tried Fedora 9 on my notebook and on a desktop. Both had Fedora 8 running smoothly and just after the upgrade, both could not boot. I used the network installation disk on both and somehow a FEDORA 7 kernel was installed on both machines just after the installation ended. I was able to recover the notebook by using rescue mode, downloading a fc9 kernel manually and installing it, but with the desktop this procedure did not work. I ended the problem by installing FC8 on another HD and recovering my data from the original disk. Sad. Really sad.

To add to my own list of problems I also discovered that I have no sound. Actually if I use the menus to go to the sound settings under the personal hardware settings and use the sound there then they DO work, however I get no sound from Firefox at all.
So system sounds are OK but anything else is not, it seems like I'm <a href="http://forums.fedoraforum.org/forum/showthread.php?t=188345&page=1&pp=15" rel="nofollow">not the only one with sound problems</a>.
I haven't checked a media player yet but will do soon and report back.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed at this release, I know cutting edge is good (at least for me) but this seems a bit too bleeding edge for my liking.

I've also had horrible problems with anaconda and installing Fedora 9 - fallen foul of the inability to read/write to Samsung hard drives.

Really, really, not good enough. I've been using Fedora on and off since version 2, and whilst I am no guru, I'm not a newbie. Hate to say it F9 was the final nail - my next Linux will be different...

Many thanks!
